It all started with one of the Julia Donaldson adaptations – and just like that, we stepped into the wonderful (and slightly wild) world of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The books are great on their own, but there’s something extra magical about the ones with Scheffler’s illustrations.
We didn’t find her books the “traditional” way. My husband just happened to find one of the first Julia Donaldson adaptations – The Gruffalo animated movie – and decided to watch it with our daughter. If you’ve seen it, you know – the Gruffalo isn’t exactly a cuddly little bunny.
I remember saying, “Wait… is this really for kids?”
And my husband just smiled and said, “But look how cool it looks.”
And you know what? He was right.
From that day on, we were hooked.
Surprisingly, the Julia Donaldson adaptations are just as lovely as the books. I’m usually a bit careful with movie versions of favorite stories – they often miss the magic. But this time, it’s different. These Julia Donaldson adaptations so well done, you don’t even feel like saying, “Well… it’s not the book.” They really shine on their own – and that doesn’t happen often!

Julia Donaldson Adaptations to Watch with Official Trailers and the Books They’re Based On
1. The Gruffalo
Release year: 2009
Duration: 27 minutes
Based on the book: The Gruffalo (1999)
What it’s about: A clever little mouse walks through the woods and makes up a scary creature called the Gruffalo to scare away hungry animals. The twist? The Gruffalo turns out to be real! But the mouse stays calm and outsmarts even the Gruffalo in the end. It’s a story about brains over brawn – and a bit of forest magic too.
Fun to know: This one of 12 Julia Donaldson adaptations was nominated for an Oscar and features Helena Bonham Carter as the narrator. It’s clever, a little bit spooky (but not too much!), and totally fun to watch together.
IMDb rating: 7.5

IMDb rating: 7.1

I honestly can’t decide which we love more – books or these Julia Donaldson adaptations. Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler truly created magic with these stories. The Mouse? Absolute legend. I mean, talk about a role model: clever, optimistic, and quick on his feet. And let’s not forget, the first book has this sneaky brilliance—it gently teaches kids why it’s so important not to go anywhere with strangers, even if they’re offering something amazing. Parenting win, right?
Apart from the main books, we also had a set of Gruffalo board books. These little treasures are perfect for toddlers – great for speech development and even introducing English to little learners in a super fun way. And then there’s the Gruffalo merchandise. Oh yes, we had keychains, activity books, and all the extras to keep the magic alive. The activity books, by the way, are a lifesaver for keeping kids busy (and quiet) while sneaking in a bit of learning.
3. Room on the Broom
Release year: 2012
Duration: 26 minutes
Based on the book: Room on the Broom (2001)
What it’s about: A kind witch and her cat fly through the sky, picking up new animal friends along the way. But their broom gets too crowded, and soon they’re in trouble with a big, scary dragon. Luckily, all the animals work together to save the day. It’s a tale full of teamwork, giggles, and just the right amount of witchy fun.
Fun to know: The BBC’s Room on the Broom animated film takes the magic of the book to the next level. It’s beautifully made, with music that pulls you in and Simon Pegg’s narration, which is just brilliant. With an Oscar nomination, and a win at the British Academy Children’s Awards for Animation, it’s a family favorite for a reason.
IMDb rating: 7.5
Room on the Broom official trailer:
Julia Donaldson adaptations: Room on the Broom
If I had to choose just five books from Julia Donaldson’s incredible collection, Room on the Broom would definitely make the list. It’s the perfect mix of magic, kindness, and fun. For grown-ups, the story could be summed up as “Do good and throw it into the water,” but for kids, it’s all about a kind witch and her loyal friends.
This isn’t just a fun story – it’s a great conversation starter with kids. While reading, you can chat about:
• Being yourself: Everyone is different, and staying true to your values can be tough sometimes (remember the frog, who cared more about cleanliness than fitting in?).
• Facing challenges: Big problems don’t mean you have to give up (just look at how they all saved the witch from the dragon!).
• Teamwork: Working together can make even the hardest tasks easier.
And honestly, it’s such a timeless story, you’ll still enjoy it even as your kids grow older.
Of course, we couldn’t resist the Room on the Broom activity books. They’re great for keeping kids entertained, and let’s be honest – they’re so fun, you might find yourself enjoying them just as much as your little one. 😉
P.S. Our daughter thought the dragon was “chubby and not scary at all.” Kids always know how to sum things up perfectly, don’t they? 😊
4. Stick Man
Release year: 2015
Duration: 27 minutes
Based on the book: Stick Man (2008)
What it’s about: Stick Man lives in a tree with his Stick Lady Love and their stick children three. One day, he’s taken by a dog and swept far from home. His journey is wild – beaches, firesides, even Christmas! All he wants is to get back to his family tree.
Fun to know: It was created by Magic Light Pictures, the team behind other Julia Donaldson adaptations like The Gruffalo, Zog, and Room on the Broom – known for their cozy, detailed animation style. Stick Man premiered on BBC One in the UK on Christmas Day in 2015 – and instantly became a holiday favorite. Martin Freeman (you might know him from Sherlock or The Hobbit) voices Stick Man, and Jennifer Saunders narrates the story.
IMDb rating: 7.2

I’ll admit, unlike some of Julia Donaldson’s other stories, this one always leaves me with a little hint of sadness. What’s really interesting, though, is that my daughter sees it completely differently.
5. The Highway Rat
Release year: 2017
Duration: 25 minutes
Based on the book: The Highway Rat (2011)
What it’s about: The Highway Rat is greedy and rude – he gallops along the road stealing food from everyone he meets. But one clever animal decides it’s time to teach him a lesson. In the end, the rat gets what he deserves. It’s funny, a bit dramatic, and full of rhyme.
Fun to know: Like many Julia Donaldson adaptations, this one became part of the BBC’s holiday tradition. It first aired on Christmas Day and quickly became a family favorite. The beloved Doctor Who actor brings the greedy (but slightly charming) rat to life with perfect drama and flair. Even though the rat steals food from everyone he meets, the story ends with a clever twist and a lesson about kindness – all without getting too serious or scary.
IMDb rating: 6.6

Did you catch the little Easter egg in the trailer?
6. Zog
Release year: 2018
Duration: 27 minutes
Based on the book: Zog (2010)
What it’s about: Zog is a young dragon at school, trying really hard to earn his gold star. But he keeps getting into trouble – bumping, crashing, and roaring at the wrong times. Then he meets a kind girl who helps him in a surprising way. Princess Pearl is one of Julia Donaldson’s coolest female characters.
She’s smart, strong, and wants to be a doctor – not a “traditional” princess. It’s a great story for showing kids that they can follow their own path.
Fun to know: Like many other Julia Donaldson adaptations, Zog was part of BBC One’s holiday lineup – perfect for a cozy family movie night. Zog is voiced by Hugh Skinner, and the narrator is none other than Game of Thrones star Kit Harington. Sir Lenny Henry also lends his voice, adding to the star power.
IMDb rating: 7.3

I really love this dragon and both of his stories. I’ve lost track of how many times we’ve read them!
7. The Snail and the Whale
Release year: 2019
Duration: 27 minutes
Based on the book: The Snail and the Whale (2003)
What it’s about: A tiny snail wants to see the world, so she hitches a ride on the tail of a kind whale. Together they travel far and wide – until the whale gets stranded. The little snail must be brave and save her big friend. It’s a gentle, adventurous story with a big heart.
Fun to know: The animated story of the snail and the whale is just as heartwarming as the book. Even the trailer is enough to melt your heart. And when the words “save the whale” appear on the screen? Let’s just say it’s hard not to tear up. This film is colorful, emotional, and absolutely charming. The snail is adorable, the whale is lovable, and the message will stay with you long after the credits roll.
IMDb rating: 7.3
The Snail and the Whale official trailer:
Julia Donaldson adaptations: The Snail and the Whale
The Snail and the Whale is a beautiful children’s book, but honestly, it’s not just for kids. Why? Because beyond the usual themes of friendship, bravery, and teamwork, it’s also about personal growth, motivation, and even leadership. Yes, leadership – demonstrated by a snail!
Think about it: the snail leaves her familiar rock and sets off on a big adventure, even though she feels small and the world seems huge. Not only does she save her whale friend, but she also inspires all the other snails to dream big and explore the world. It’s a story full of courage and transformation – perfect for kids and grown-ups alike.
8. Zog and the Flying Doctors

What it’s about: Zog, Princess Pearl, and Sir Gadabout fly across the kingdom helping poorly creatures. But Pearl’s uncle says princesses can’t be doctors. When he gets sick, Pearl proves just how smart and brave she really is. A story full of care, courage, and kindness.
Fun to know: Following the tradition of Julia Donaldson adaptations, Zog and the Flying Doctors was BBC One’s festive gift for families to enjoy on Christmas Day.
IMDb rating: 6.7

If you love the Zog books as much as we do, go ahead and watch the second part without even checking the ratings. It’s totally worth it!
9. Superworm
Release year: 2021
Duration: 25 minutes
Based on the book: Superworm (2012)
What it’s about: Superworm is the hero of the garden – long, strong, and always ready to help. But when a wicked wizard captures him, it’s up to his friends to rescue their hero. It’s a funny, bouncy story about friendship, teamwork, and being a good friend.
Fun to know: Thanks to Magic Light Pictures (same team as The Gruffalo and Zog), the animation is warm, colorful, and full of little garden details – leaves, bugs, puddles, and all. It has a fantastic voice cast – Matt Smith (yes, the Doctor Who one!) voices Superworm, Olivia Colman is the narrator, and Patricia Allison (Sex Education) voices Butterfly. It’s a starry crew for such a wiggly hero! This Julia Donaldson adaptation is full of of action, kindness, and team spirit. Great for little ones who love playing outdoors or helping out.

10. The Smeds and the Smoos

What it’s about: The Smeds (red) and the Smoos (blue) don’t play together or even talk. But when a young Smed and Smoo fall in love, their families must learn to understand each other. It’s a colorful space adventure about love and acceptance. A perfect pick for talking about kindness and inclusion.
Fun to know: It’s basically Romeo and Juliet… in space! Narrated by the legendary Adjoa Andoh (you might recognize her from Bridgerton!)
IMDb rating: 7.2

11. Tabby McTat
Release year: 2023
Duration: 27 minutes
Based on the book: Tabby McTat (2009)
What it’s about: Tabby McTat is a street cat who sings with his busker friend every day. But one day, they get separated, and Tabby starts a new life with a new family. Still, he never forgets his old friend – and finds a way back to him. A touching story about friendship, music, and finding home.
Fun to know: A warm, musical story about friendship and finding your way home (and yes, it will probably make you smile and tear up just a little). Julia Donaldson once said she was inspired by seeing buskers and their pets while out and about. That real-life moment turned into this sweet tale of a singing cat and a lasting bond.
IMDb rating: 7.3
Tabby McTat official trailer:
Julia Donaldson adaptations: Tabby McTat
Tabby McTat was the second Julia Donaldson book we read, and we loved it so much we practically wore it out. I ended up memorizing the entire story and would recite it while putting my daughter to bed. It’s not just a sweet story – it’s truly captivating.
One of my favorite parts is how Julia Donaldson handled the moment when Fred and Tabby reunited after being apart. By then, Tabby McTat had his own family – a cat-wife and adorable kittens. It’s such a heartwarming and thoughtful twist that makes the story unforgettable.
If you’re just discovering Julia Donaldson’s books, I’d actually recommend starting with Tabby McTat…the musical cat instead of The Gruffalo. It’s such a charming and touching story that’s perfect for introducing her magical world.
12. Tiddler
Release year: 2024
Duration: Around 27 minutes
Based on the book: Tiddler (2007)
What it’s about: Tiddler is a little fish with a big imagination. He’s always late – but always has a wild excuse! One day, he gets caught in a real adventure. It’s a playful story about storytelling and the power of creative thinking.
Fun to know: Tiddler has been on many fans’ Julia Donaldson adaptations wish lists for years – and now it’s finally being turned into a BBC animated film by Magic Light Pictures (the same team behind The Gruffalo and Zog). If your child loves making up stories, this one’s a must-watch. It’s all about imagination and adventure!
IMDb rating: 6.2

Even though my child absolutely loved this story, I have to admit – it still kind of annoys me a little. Probably because I really don’t like it when someone is always late 😄
